"Crimp the night away!"

If you are like me, summertime humidity is murder on your hair! Living in the South, I've had my fair share of hairstyles ruined the moment that I step outdoors and experience the crippling heat. With the increased frequency of afternoon showers and the temperature steadily rising as we continue further into the summer, it only gets harder to maintain a great looking mane throughout the day! And nothing sucks more than spending an hour slaving and struggling with a blow dryer and a flat iron, only to walk outside and immediately have your hair frizz and turn into a mega-Afro because of the humidity. That being said, summertime is actually my favorite season for hair. I like to embrace the heat & humidity, tuck my flat iron away for the winter, and bring on the easiest hair of the year - beachy waves!
But let's face it, we are all so busy these days, and during the summer especially! No one wants to spend a ton of time in the bathroom mirror, trial and error-ing style after style - we want to get it right, look great, and get our butts to the pool or to a summer concert! Here are my new favorite ways to get fabulous, foolproof summer hair without having to spend all of my freetime doing it!
My friend, Whitney, was a very lovely & willing model, and we appreciate her greatly!

As you can see, she has gorgeous hair to start with!
Now, if you are a child of the 90s, you will probably recognize this look and tool pretty quickly. I remember it as a "Topsy tail", but I found it being retailed at Ulta the other day as the EZ-Twist. You can do so much with this little tool - dress up a ponytail, make a faux french braid (which I especially love - even though I am a hair stylist, braiding does not come naturally to me, and it is not one of my strengths) - you can do so much SO quickly. Lets face it - somedays, it is too hot to leave your hair down - I love that you can use the EZ-Twist to make a really basic look a little bit fancier. Throw a bow in it, and you're all set for work, a nice dinner, a movie - anywhere you want to go!
You can use the same steps to make a simple knot to pull your bangs back away from your face -
Or you can create a faux french braid. All you need is the EZ twist, and a few clear rubber bands! You'll be finished in a minute flat! Just keep adding rubber bands to the ponytail and pulling the tail through the EZ twist - so simple! The options are endless, and the time spent is next to nothing.
My second favorite tool of the summer is the CRIMPER. Yes, the CRIMPER! Another 90's throwback! I have tried all sorts of ways to give myself really gorgeous and long-lasting beachy waves, and the crimper has been BY FAR my most foolproof. I got mine (Ion brand) at Sally Beauty Supply for around $30, and let me tell you, that $30 was WELL SPENT! I have crimped the dickens out of every lock and strand I have come across! Never will you find a more natural and gorgeous, but more importantly, long-lasting and HUMIDITY RESISTANT way to get the perfect summer waves - I've worn my crimped hair to the lake, to work, and to a hot and sweaty outdoor concert (Third Eye Blind - so great!) - and the humidity couldn't knock it!

+ Section the hair in 1 inch partings
+ Use a heat protectant on hair (very important - don't want to damage those lovely locks!)
+ Start crimping 1/2 of an inch from the root/scalp
+ Hold iron to hair for 5-7 seconds
+ Move iron into next "fold" of hair, and repeat!
+ Finish with a light hairspray or texturizing sea salt spray
**As a bonus, if you want to preserve your crimp for the next day, just braid your hair into pigtails before hitting the hay at night, and they will still look like a million bucks the next day!

So easy! Whitney's hair took no time at all, and looks great! She can throw a cute hair accessory in the front -
…. or use the EZ twist to pin her bangs back away from her face! Either way, she's ready for a day at the beach!
The best part about these styles is that while they are perfect for summer, they can also easily be turned into up-dos, or carried over into the winter. These styles are perfect for someone like Whitney, because she's a high school teacher, and she doesn't have much time to spend in the mirror in the morning before heading off to class - she needs something quick and simple, while still looking like she has put effort into her hair.
This face says it all! She loves her new look!
